RULES FOR PAPER PROPOSAL SUBMISSIONS
According to the IUAES tradition, open panels allow anthropologists from different countries to meet around a thematic proposal.
- The scholars intending to submit their paper proposal are required to choose a specific panel (see the list of IUAES 2019 panels). Each IUAES 2019 participant can present only one paper.
- The papers which will not be accepted by the chosen panel’s convenors, but which are otherwise valuable proposals, may be transferred to other panels with spaces to fill. In such a case authors might be asked to modify their proposals in order to meet the criteria of other panel.
- Each scholar is allowed to submit paper proposals for no more than two panels. In the case that both proposals are accepted, the author will have to withdraw his/her proposal from one of the panels.
- All IUAES 2019 participants presenting or co-presenting their papers will become members of the IUAES in 2019 (the membership fee will be included in the conference fee).
- An IUAES 2019 participant may be a discussant and present a paper – these two activities can be combined – but not within the same panel.
- Panel convenors may submit paper proposals to their panels but they should not prioritise their own proposals over other proposals.
- The language for all proposals is English, and it is a suggested language for the paper presentations as well, since there will not be simultaneous translation during the panels. However, in cases where panel convenors decide to accept the language of presentation other than English, the oral presentation ought to be accompanied by extended slide presentations (such as PowerPoint) in English in order to assure the effective communication among all the involved participants.
- It is the panel convenors’ responsibility to select papers for presentation.
The criteria for paper proposals approval
Panel convenors are responsible for the selection of the most suitable papers for their panels and also need to observe the national and institutional diversity of the submitted papers, thus guaranteeing the participation of researchers from different countries. The decision will be based on:
- compliance with the rules (see above)
- quality of the proposal (clarity, cohesion and academic rigour)
How to submit
- The author submitting the paper proposal will be first asked to complete the Registration form in order to receive the Registration ID required to proceed to the second form (Paper proposal submission) [Skip this step if you already have RegID]
- All submissions must be made via the online form.
- In the on-line submission form the authors will be asked to provide:
- Title of an open panel to which you prefer to submit your paper
- Title of the paper (please keep it concise).
- Short paper’s abstract (up to 300 characters with spaces).
- Long paper’s abstract (up to 250 words).
- 3 to 5 keywords.
- Information on the proposed language of presentation, if other than English. In case of choosing a language of presentation other than English, the author of an accepted paper will have to prepare the extended slide presentation in English. All IUAES 2019 rooms will be equipped with devices and software allowing such presentations.
- Please note that once submitted, the proposal cannot be modified online. In case you need to change your original submission, please send the information about the required modifications to the Registration Team: iuaes2019@mazurkas.pl
Responsibilities of the panel convenors in regard to paper proposals selection
- Evaluate and select papers for presentation via the online form by indicating whether to accept/reject/transfer proposals, by 28 February 2019 (paper proposals indicated as ‘transfer’ are those which convenors find valuable but which do not fit their panel). Each session of a panel (of 105 minutes) can have 4 to 5 oral presentations – 4 presentations is a minimum number for a panel to take place. Convenors need to observe the national and institutional diversity of the submission, thus guaranteeing the participation of researchers from different countries. The maximum number of sessions for one panel is 3.
- Organise the panel sessions, including the order of the presentations, which can be facilitated via the online form once the papers are approved.
- Decide about the time allocated to the authors to present their papers. Panel convenors need to make sure that all authors will have equal time (not less than 10 minutes per paper) and that there will be enough time for discussion.
- Make sure that in case of presentation accepted in other languages than English, the oral presentation will be accompanied by extended slide presentation (such as PowerPoint) in English in order to assure the effective communication among all the involved participants, and that the discussion will be held in English (or translated by the convenors into English).
- Keep the participants of the panel informed of: date, time, and location of their presentations; speaking order; time allocated to each paper; the obligation to register; any late changes and any other information related to the panel.
- Inform the Organising Committee about any panelist withdrawals.
